On 12 July 2011 around 1000 young people, teachers, judges and activity providers descended on New College Durham for a celebration of all things STEM. All sorts of exciting, inspiring and fun activities were on offer.

Talented young scientists and engineers from across the North East showed off their project work. See who scooped the prizes and the coveted places at the national fair here.

Drop-in stands included 'Welding with Chocolate' (The Welding Institute) and Dove Marine Lab’s animal touch tank, both a huge hit. A range of local organisations ran workshop sessions including Catapault Challenge (Discovery Museum), Stomp Rockets (Centre for Life), The World of Microbes (University of Teesside), Sustainable Building (University of Teesside), Our Expanding Universe (Best Fit Line Rulers) and Minibeast Hunting (OPAL).

Sports engineer and Royal Academy of Engineering public engagement fellow, Dr David James from Sheffield Hallam University gave a fascinating talk on the science, technology and engineering of sport. We also heard from Aseem Mishra, whose Drum-kit trousers wowed judges at the National Fair.
