One-line description:
Working with school groups at The Fair, discussing and contextualising what the students see.
 

2011 Flying Penguins Minimum requirements:
Post-graduate degree in a STEM subject OR five years’ experience in a STEM profession in a hands-on or managerial capacity.

(STEM = science, technology, engineering or maths)
 

Minimum time commitment:
One complete shift on any one day of The Fair.
Morning shift 7am – 1pm; afternoon shift 12pm – 6pm (times include the compulsory briefing). 

Preparation required:
Compulsory: review of all general volunteer briefing, health & safety, and logistics documentation.

Compulsory: review of main show floor-plan, top-ten activity suggestions, and careers pathways.

Suggested: review of activities, shows and workshops available.
 

Skills learnt:

  • Science communication
  • Presenting changing topics on an ad hoc basis

 

Other notes:
All the above-mentioned documents will be made available to registered volunteers in early 2012.

This role presents volunteers with an opportunity to practice their communication skills in a challenging but rewarding environment.  This role allows for in-depth interaction with an interested audience, covering and drawing together multiple topics.
