What will I do at The Big Bang?
There are several roles available for volunteers.  Job descriptions for each of these are available via the links on the left-hand side, or by clicking on the role title below.

General Volunteers - assisting the public in getting the best from The Fair, and helping with careers information and crowd-control.

STEM Guides - Science & engineering professionals accompanying school groups around The Fair.

Career Networkers - Science & engineering professionals and researchers, talking to students about their jobs.

Registration Assistants - helping visitors sign-in and collect their essential information

Competitor Care Volunteers - helping Competitors in the National Science & Engineering Competition.

Evaluation Assistants - surveying our visitors to help us build an even better Big Bang next year!

Please take the time to read through the job descriptions of any roles you are interested in, to make sure you are eligible and able to assist.  Please note that you cannot volunteer for a specific role at present.

Who can volunteer?
Anyone with an interest in science and engineering can volunteer as long as you are over 18 years old.  Whether you’re a research professor of twenty years standing, or you’re half-way through your physics A-level, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for enthusiastic role models, people who can really be ambassadors for the message of The Fair: that science, technology, engineering and maths can be fun and can lead to exciting and worthwhile careers. Volunteering at the fair is hard work, though extremely rewarding, and we will be looking for people who are committed to the roles.

If you're outgoing, enthusiastic, and have a background in science, engineering, technology or maths, sign up now!

If I register, am I guaranteed a place?

We have places for hundreds of volunteers. We hope to be able to find a role for everyone who registers but unfortunately cannot make a guarantee. We will confirm your place by the end of January 2012.

Is there training?

Yes. Training will be done online, via a portal available to volunteers upon registration. We will have videos, multiple-choice tests, and much more to help you prepare for your time at The Big Bang Fair.  We cannot offer on-site training before the event, as the majority of our volunteers are in full-time work and many are based some distance from Birmingham.

Pre-Fair information:
The following will be made available in early 2012:

  • Floor plans
  • Activity, workshop and show schedules
  • Travel information
  • Venue map
  • Health & Safety information
  • Other useful documents as appropriate

Will my expenses be covered?
We will be unable to cover travel and refreshment expenses.  However, drinks and some food will be available for all volunteers.
