Daisy Carter - STEM Inspiration Volunteer

 Daisy Carter

What do you do?

I am a Highways Trainee Technician, working in the civil engineering sector with a company called Jacobs. I completed A Levels in English Literature, Biology and Maths.

What motivated you to volunteer at The Big Bang Fair 2018?

Before joining Jacobs, I felt that I had to go down the University route as the opportunities weren’t as great in Apprenticeships. However, I am now doing a Traineeship which is a route that I wasn’t aware of, and I think that it should be advocated for on a wider scale.

What was your role at The Big Bang Fair 2018 and what sort of things did you do?

I was a STEM Inspiration Volunteer. I was responsible for networking with children and answering any question that they had regarding STEM subjects and my career in particular.

What did you enjoy most about volunteering?

I really enjoyed having the chance to see what children’s perspectives are on Engineering. There are a lot of misconceptions associated with civil engineering in particular (i.e. I physically building the roads that I design), so it was a great chance to hear a range of views and also test my own knowledge on the subject.

Would you recommend volunteering at The Big Bang Fair?

I would definitely recommend it. I really enjoyed talking to children who are in the same position that I was in a few years ago, and also having the chance to walk around the NEC and be really involved in the whole Fair.
