Volunteer Registration Introduction

The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair is looking for hundreds of volunteers in various positions to ensure a smooth running to The Fair. The Fair is expected to attract thousands of young people from across the country to the three days of interactive STEM engagement. With some of the biggest names in STEM engagement on show including Brainiac Live, Bang Goes the Theory, The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and TEDxBig Bang. With school students from 9-19 years over the Thursday and Friday, including Further Education Colleges, State Secondary Schools, Independent Secondary Schools, and Primary Schools, the event is open to the general public on Saturday, where 5,000 people are expected to attend.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:

Each volunteer will be required to attend a volunteer briefing day on either 18th February in London or 26th February in Manchester in addition to providing at least one day of volunteering on site. Being able to engage with a wide variety of people from across all spectrums of the community and present an open and engaging view of STEM to all.

SPECIFIC VOLUNTEER ROLES:

 A.            Event Expert Guides:

Selected volunteers will be chosen to become the ‘Expert Guide’ for each school in attendance at the Fair. All Expert Guides will be paired with a school prior to the Fair. You will be notified of who these groups and invited (should you choose) to speak to / meet your matched school prior to the Fair and ensure they are prepared for the Fair. You will be required to meet the school on site, and then guide them across the day according to their individual schedules on the show floor, activities, workshops, presentations and shows. You will also be required to answer any general questions that the teachers or students may have about the Fair, STEM content and being able to either answer the questions or point them in the right direction for their answer.

B.            Session / activity assistant:

All activities will require ushers at each of the doors to check individuals are at the right room for the right session (this will be identified on their badges). This should not present as much of a problem for large groups, as they will be escorted by a STEM Ambassador, but you must still check in all instances and re-direct where applicable.

C.            Venue / Zone monitors

Monitors are required to stand by their allocated zone, directing guests to areas and ensuring a free flow of visitors through the building.

E.            Careers Officers 

Careers Officers are required to answer any careers related queries that visitors may ask, staff the central Careers Hub in the venue and manage “speed networking” events to talk to visitors about potential career options.

F.            Registration desk support:

There will be several registration desks designated to the various types of visitors. We are looking for people to meet and greet all guests / participants as they arrive, check their badge and scan them into the system. In some instances you may be required to register their attendance, electronic booths are provided to facilitate the printing of badges.
All volunteers will be provided a unique opportunity to meet new people in the community, have fun, see some great shows and activities, and have a great day!

G.            Speed networker:

Speed networking uses the successful 2009 “speed dating” format.  Networkers are asked to chat to small groups of students 4 minutes at a time about their job and, where possible, bring an object to prompt discussion.  Sessions are scheduled take place in each zone and last no more than an hour at a time.
